Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park spans over 3,160 hectares and is characterized by its undulating hills, cloud forests, and vibrant flora. As you venture into this captivating wilderness, you’ll encounter a range of natural wonders, from cascading waterfalls to dense forests teeming with endemic plants and wildlife.

The highlight of Horton Plains is undoubtedly “World’s End,” a sheer cliff with a drop of approximately 870 meters. This awe-inspiring viewpoint offers uninterrupted vistas of the surrounding valleys, shrouded in mist. As the morning sun illuminates the landscape, the panoramic view unfolds, leaving visitors speechless. It is best experienced early in the day when the mist is still lingering, creating a mystical ambiance.

Not far from World’s End, you’ll discover Baker’s Falls, a picturesque waterfall cascading from a height of 20 meters. The cool spray and the tranquil beauty of the falls provide a refreshing respite amidst the lush greenery of the park.

Horton Plains is renowned for its rich biodiversity and is home to many species found nowhere else on the planet. The park boasts a variety of wildlife, including the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, sambar deer, purple-faced langur, and the endemic Horton Plains slender loris. Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot vibrant avian species such as the Sri Lanka whistling thrush, Sri Lanka bush warbler, and the elusive Sri Lanka wood pigeon.

The park’s ecosystems range from cloud forests to grasslands, each supporting a unique array of plant life. The iconic “Pattipola” grasslands, stretching as far as the eye can see, create a captivating landscape that is often blanketed in mist, giving an ethereal feel to the surroundings.

Horton Plains offers an invigorating trekking experience, with a well-marked trail that takes you through its captivating landscapes. The circular trail is approximately 9.5 kilometers long and winds through grasslands, cloud forests, and along the edges of precipices. The serene walk allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature, providing ample opportunities to spot wildlife and appreciate the endemic flora.

As you traverse the trail, you’ll encounter various points of interest, including Mini World’s End, a smaller version of the iconic viewpoint, and Chimney Pool, a serene location surrounded by lush vegetation. The trek culminates at the entrance to Baker’s Falls, where you can pause to admire its beauty before making your way back to the starting point.
